The San Diego Sheriff's Office has concluded its investigation into the New Year's Day shooting that left four people dead.
Here is what the investigative report said:
The Sheriff's Department has concluded the investigation into the Coronado New Year's Day triple homicide and suicide which left four people dead. This included a forensic analysis; ballistic and DNA of the two firearms, which belonged to the suspect, John Robert Reeves.
The case concluded that John Reeves was responsible for the murders of David Andrew Reis (age 25), Karen Elizabeth Reis (age 24), Matthew Christopher Saturley (age 31), before Reeves took his own life.
--- Synopsis ---
David Andrew Reis, LTJG and John Robert Reeves, LTJG were both active duty Naval Officers, and pilots in training, stationed aboard Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar with the Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101 (VMFAT-101). Reis and Reeves shared a condominium in the 1000 block of Park Place in Coronado, California.
During the early morning hours of Sunday January 1, 2012, David, and his sister Karen Elizabeth Reis celebrated New Year's at a local San Diego nightclub, along with David's roommate John Reeves. The group met Matthew Christopher Saturley, that evening at the nightclub.
After enjoying the evening's celebrations and shortly after 2:00 a.m., the group arrived at the Park Place condominium in Coronado, where John Reeves entered the residence first. Once inside, Reeves armed himself with two firearms which he owned; a Springfield Armory M1 30-06 caliber rifle and a Taurus PT1911 .45 caliber ACP pistol. Reeves then went to the third floor, where he lay in wait.
A few moments after Reeves entered the residence, Matthew Saturley and Karen Reis followed him inside. Upon reaching the third floor, Matthew Saturley and Karen Reis were met by Reeves, where Reeves shot both of them with his M1 rifle. Matthew Saturley was struck numerous times in the upper torso, and Karen Reis was shot in the face and chest. Matthew Saturley and Karen Reis were found on the floor near the doorway of the third floor bedroom.
Shortly after the first volley of gunfire, and in response to hearing his sister Karen scream, David Reis immediately, and without hesitation ran into the residence. David made it to the second floor, at the base of the stairway to the third floor. Reeves then shot David Reis three times with the Taurus handgun from above; striking David Reis in the left hand, thigh, and in the back with the fatal round.
John Reeves then turned the handgun on himself, fatally shooting himself in the head.
The investigation has concluded that John Reeves fired the only two firearms in the residence that were involved in this murder-suicide. The other firearms collected for testing had not been fired, nor had those firearms been removed from their storage locations.
The investigation did not confirm a clear motive for the murders.
