Senator Michael J. Rubio (D – Shafter) released a statement Friday morning announcing his resignation.

“As many of you know, a little over a year ago I decided not to run for the United States Congress to meet the needs of my growing family," Rubio said in the statement. "My time serving since then has been a blessing, but it has also been a challenge. I have missed too many family dinners, bedtime stories and parent-teacher conferences."

"My wife and I have been blessed with two beautiful daughters, from whom we have learned a great deal. Our youngest child, who has special needs, has given me great perspective as to life’s priorities and our eldest has reminded me that the most critical decisions are made at home and not under the Capitol dome," he continued.

Rubio said he accepted a position with Chevron to serve as manager of California government affairs.

"In my absence, Senate staff will remain in the district and Capitol offices to respond to the needs of residents of the 16th State Senate District--as they have always done,” Rubio said in the statement.

Sounds like Chevron had him in their pocket and it's time to get out before he ended up in prison and time for Chevron to pay up! Maybe that prison thing isn't out of the picture just yet!

sewinfool: I know how politicians are. A good majority of them are crooks. And now Rubio is being looked into for some questionable deals regarding his affiliation in the oil industry and sales/purchases of home. I question how he can afford to buy a $680,000 home. Sorry, but something smells fishy here.....

As for giving him credit I discredit him for running out on the people he promise to serve for the term he was elected to! We all have given up a lot over the years to take care of our families and to do our jobs, what if everyone just walked off their jobs?

workinghard - his child was born last year with Downs Syndrome. Until you are actually responsible for a child that falls out of the "normal" category, you can't know how difficult it is. I actually give him much credit for having the guts to get out of the public eye for the sake of his family. You know how politicians are....!!!

sewinfool: He had this special needs child before he went into this office. He should have thought of this before he made the commitment to serve the public. Now he has the appearance of serving his own needs by cozying up with Chevron. A good question was posed: Did he get this job because he was already in their pocket?

This means he has been in Chevron's pocket for some time now and it is finally time for Chevron to pay up. It would be interesting to look back at his voting record to see what votes he made were in Chevron's favor. This kind of political behavior should be strictly prohibited.

Not a Democrat - didn't vote for him. But I'm going to err on the side of mercy here and say that, as a mother of a special needs child myself, and knowing the demands this puts on my time, maybe he really wants to put the needs of his family first.

A job at Chevron = $$$$$$$$ Convenient to have that little gem all lined up before you resign. I guess his family wasn't quite so neglected before this came along. You can't tell me that he didn't have those exact same obligations prior to this cushy job offer.
