I still don't understand. How did they live that made them heros?

They are not calling them heroes because of how they died. They are heroes because of how they lived. God Bless the Reis family and I know I am going to be proud to wear the bracelet and be a part of the Reis ripple!

I understand the family wants to remember them with the Reis ripple but I don't understand what makes them heros.

The Reis family wants others to share the unselfish spirit David and Karen personified, so they've created the Reis Ripple - bright bracelets that challenge people who wear them to help others feel special and succeed. "You affect so many people's lives every day, positively and negatively," said their mother, Patty Reis. "If we would all choose to live positively and selflessly like they did, the things we do will ripple out." http://www.facebook.com/ReisRipple

Very sorry for the lost of their children, But I think there is more to the story. Being shot to death doesn't make them hero's!
