Concerned parents and family members were outside the office of a local dentist Monday to protest what they said is mistreatment of children. The group said dentist Dr. Edward Dove has mistreated several children, with allegations of slapping, strapping children down and not waiting until children were sedated to pull teeth out.

At his Bakersfield practice on Union Ave., about 10 parents held signs some that read "think twice before you see Doctor Dove." Several of them said they are in the process of filing complaints against the doctor with the California Dental Board.

"We want to get the message out because more and more people are coming out and saying oh my word that happened to my son, or my daughter, or my grandchild," concerned parent Carol Webb said. "We want Dr. Dove's license to be revoked we don't want him practicing.

Dr. Dove released this statement to 17 News.

"We are not an abortion clinic. This is harassment. We had to call the police this morning because the protesters were harassing the patients. We had a full schedule of patients today."

Parents have also started a Facebook page to give others a chance to share their Dr. Dove stories. The page is called "I hate Dr. Dove."

The state dental board said it investigates all consumer complaints. A spokesperson won't say whether there have been other complaints against Dr. Dove, but does say there have been no disciplinary actions against him.

Im a dental assistant and I see nothing wrong w/ Dr. Dove strapping kids down. first of all, its the parents fault bc THEY TALK TOO MUCH. When I say they talk too much, I mean, they tell their kids before going to the dentist that the dentist is going to use a "needle", "shot", or its going to "hurt". Why use those terms to scare your kids? Seriously, if parents were smart enough, keep your mouth shut and dont say a word. better yet, use words like "injection" or "syringe" so your kids wont know. I worked for a pediatric dentist office and we dont strap kids down or sedate them, but I see nothing wrong w/ it if its needs to be used. Secondly, Parents, if you notice why most dentist offices don't allow parents in the back when procedures are going on is bc you guys talk too much. thats the honest truth. =D Learn how to keep your mouth shut so your kids wont be so scare of the dentist.

As a 51 year old man, I can still vividly remember the horific actions and words of my childhood dentist. To this day, this prior dentist's treatment has forced me to request a valium prior to any type of dental proceedure. To the dentist that says it is hard to work on a child with the parent present, I say, "too bad." Even medical Doctors allow sedated, yet awake patients/children to have a parent present. Don't use the excuse of an unruly child as a way to avoid true professionalism in an advanced profession such as dentistry. Even barbers can deal with an unruly child!

Dental work makes me nervous, as well as my children. We have had not so good experiences at other childrens dentist, my daughter, and two sons actually enjoy coming to Dr. Dove, and that is something i was never able to say about a dentist!... PS. people should know better and not believe everythin in the media there is always two sides of the story !...

I almost took my young children to see doctor Dove a few years ago after moving to Bakersfield, but after finding out that their policy was that parents couldnt be present during treatment, I went elsewhere. I have a 4 year old daughter who needs dental treatment and havent found a pediatric dentist who will allow me to be present during treatment, as of yet. Just like one of the other bloggers, I also had a very tramatic experience with a dentist when I was under the age of 6 years, and I will never allow my child to be in any dentist room alone for treatment. I will go out of the county to find a dentist if I have to. Thanks for all of the warnings and I think Parenta should be aware of any misconduct of a dentist they bring there child to. people should not be so quick to judge a concerned parent in disbeleif. It happens--I beleive it because I am a victim of one of them. If a dentist cannot handle an "uncooperative child", then he shouldnt be in pedatric dentistry.

There are numerous patients/guardians of patients posting similar reports and the Dental Board isn't substantiating the reports. The communication here is the most productive way for parents to protect their childre from the repeated gross negligent conduct their child is suffering by. Dialog is so important because disciplined or PROBATIONER DENTISTS actual conduct and/or changed status is nowhere to be found in the dental office http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/Pass-Tinas-Bill/

I blame the staff & every single one of his Assistants as much as I do Dr. Dove. Dr. Dove, his staff & assistants are no better than the Small Smiles staff from 2008(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIoMaw4zC9Q) & it is UNACCEPTABLE. If you work here you should want come forward with your story as Chris Cook said, you can remain confidential by sending an inbox message! Think of the fear these children are being subjected to because as a VERY IRATE Parent, I put my faith in God before I returned to the Office to confront everyone in there BUT the next person may not!

On 09/16/11 I took my daughter to Dentist(Edward E Dove, DDS in Chatsworth, CA) to get treated by a "child specialist" because my Dentist wasn't able to do the work. She of course like any other child is afraid of the Dentist, so they referred us to Dr. Dove. The 1st appointment my Mother and I were allowed to go in the back while he assessed her and while she got her x-rays. On 09/16/11 I was not allowed to go back even though she was being sedated! It took them close to an hour to call her to do the work. I was NEVER told that she would be strapped down...what is the purpose of the sedation medication? Why does a sedated child need to be strapped down without a family member present? The "child cocktail" must be a hoax to collect a $150.00 fee from the Parents because it does not work! He admittedly told me after they were finished that my daughter "tried to break away" and "she kept trying to get up"! Why didn't he stop to come get me? I AM LIVID! He then said to me that "he told her she had to be a big girl & he had no more problems after that." When they walked my daughter around the corner she was horrified, crying excessively, sweating and saying "Mom I couldn't breathe." I said what do you mean? He didn't care to explain and she just clinged to me sobbing! I carried her to the car & she fell asleep. At home when she awoke about an hour later, she said she could not breathe because he placed his hand over her mouth while pinching her nose and telling her "SUCK IT UP YOU HAVE TO BE A BIG GIRL", as she cried in fear! She couldn't breathe!!! He did this while she was strapped down, so not only could I not hear her yell for me , the music was blasting & she could not defend herself! What he is doing is the same as the Small Smiles stories from 2008- watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIoMaw4zC9Q&feature=related , except he is using all Insurance Companies. More work, more bonuses & this is why his Staff is helping him! I AM IRATE to say the least!

As a Dental Professional it is very hard to read some of the comments being posted. I have worked in the dental field for over 15 years and have heard, several stories related to bad dentistry. What I do not understand is how out of the woodwork you have so many people coming out and saying this happened to my child, because someone shows you a picture of a slap mark on a child does not mean is was done by the dentist. What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? I have worked in a pediatric office and have experienced children vomiting due to oral sedation and urinating on themselves. Parents that have not experienced an uncooperative child in a dental office should be careful not to pass judgment. Parents have a choice on where to take their children; they sign documents without ever reading them and then get angry when they do not know what is going on in the back room with their child. You have rights, if you do not want your child strapped down or sedated then say “NO”. Go somewhere else. Children can be very difficult to deal with when the parent is in the room. A lot of parents cause more stress on the child when they are in the room. I have had to deal with parents yelling at their child so the dental work can be done. I have always had better results dealing with children when the parents were out of the room. I just hope that all these people coming forward and making these accusations are making them for the right reasons, otherwise shame on them. Unfortunately some individuals just like the attention and will use their children to get it. Another issue I have with some of the comments is that parents have remarked my child was not numb. Parents cannot determine weather or not a child is numb and as for oral sedation it is used to calm the child not put them to sleep. I really hope everything goes well for both parties.
