More crashes on our local highways have turned deadly.
One of them happened during a series of accidents on Interstate Five, west of Bakersfield around 6:30 Monday night. the CHP says 31-year-old Zachary Huber from Oregon was driving a small U-Haul truck north on Interstate 5 approaching Stockdale Highway when he slammed into the back of a semi-truck.
The U-haul caught fire and Huber died at the scene.
It is the same area of I-5 where on-going construction has hampered traffic for several weeks.
"There is a lot of construction on the Five, just take your time. Look out for emergency vehicles, slow moving vehicles, people stopping," said Captain Mike Perry with the Kern County Fire Department. "Just take your time. Don't rubber neck when you go buy incidents. Try to move through there safely."
Two other crashes happened within minutes of each other, also near the Stockdale Highway interchange - but in the southbound lanes.
The driver of a car went off the freeway and rolled over. That driver had to be cut out of the car with the jaws of life and suffered moderate injuries.
Once fire crews left that wreck they came across another accident just a mile down the road. The driver of a semi truck slammed on his breaks due to heavy traffic and jackknifed, hitting the back of another big rig.
There were no injuries in that accident.
