A local man is in the hospital after riding his bicycle into an oncoming car.

The accident happened Monday afternoon on Norris Road near Hurrle Street in Oildale. The CHP says the man was riding his bike eastbound in the westbound lanes.

The driver of a west-bound car attempted to avoid the bicyclist, veering to the right at the last second, but the man on the bike veered to the left, right into the path of that car. The man hit the car and flew over the top, landing in the street and suffered major injuries.

The CHP says it appears the bicyclist may have been under the influence of alcohol, and they are investigating.
