San Diego Sheriff's investigators have concluded and just released their report from a New Year's Eve tragedy that claimed the lives of Bakersfield brother and sister David and Karen Reis.
David's roommate shot the siblings and a man his sister met that night, before taking his own life. Although no motive has officially been revealed, it appears jealousy prompted the gunman to open fire.
The San Diego Sheriff's Department confirms David's roommate, John Reeves, had feelings for Karen. They also told us Karen didn't feel the same about Reeves, but they were still friends.
On Wednesday, investigators confirmed John Reeves was the only one who fired shots in the Coronado condo he shared with David Reis.
"It was a good feeling to know they hadn't done anything wrong," said Patty Reis, David and Karen's mother.
Patty and Tom Reis granted 17 News their only on camera interview earlier this month, since their children, David and Karen, were shot to death.
"I mean we know what happened. The Sheriff came up Tuesday night after they died and told us," recalled Patty.
Those details were made public and were so hard to hear, that the Reis' declined to talk about them Wednesday.
The San Diego Sheriff's Department investigation shows Karen and David Reis, along with fellow FA-18 fighter pilot and roommate, John Reeves, went to a downtown nightclub on New Year's Eve.
"At this nightclub, they met Matthew Saturley and they are just young people, beginning of their career with their lives. They are having a wonderful time. It's New Year's Eve," said Jan Caldwell, San Diego Sheriff's Department.
Jan Caldwell says Karen Reis and Matthew Saturley formed a connection and headed back to the Park Place condo David Reis and John Reeves shared. As soon as they arrived, Reeves rushed inside, claiming he had to use the restroom.
"What they don't know is that he is laying in wait. He gathers a rifle and a handgun and he goes up to the third floor and he waits with his weapons," said Caldwell.
A short time later, Karen and Matthew head up to the third floor bedroom, where Reeves, who had feelings for Karen, was waiting.
"He unloads. He shoots Karen in the face several times, in the back. And, he also shoots Saturley, and they are fatal wounds," said Caldwell.
Outside, David who was talking with another man, heard his sister scream and without hesitation, ran inside.
"He runs upstairs. He makes it to the second floor where again his roommate, his friend, his colleague is there with his handgun and then opens fire on David," said Caldwell.
Reeves shot David three times, then turned the gun on himself. "We can theorize, but the only person who knows why he did this is gone and he can't tell us," said Caldwell.
"Well, it hasn't really all of the way hit yet. It's uh, still pretty unthinkable," Patty Reis told us earlier this month.
Caldwell says the department isn't aware of any mental issues Reeves may have had in the past.
The man David Reis was talking to before the shooting was the one who called 911 and helped investigators establish the timeline.
He has not been publicly identified.
