President Barack Obama says most young illegal immigrants will no longer be deported. The president announced the new policy at the White House Friday.

The decision is welcome news for thousands of illegal immigrants, including one local college student who could face deportation at the end of the month.

Maricruz Razo was brought to Bakersfield when she was eight years old. This is her home. Because she entered the country illegally, her chances of becoming a legal resident were slim.

Razo thought she would be forced to leave the country until the process was completed, but the president's announcement gives her hope she can stay.

19-year-old Maricruz Razo packed up eleven years of hard work, sacrifices and dreams into a tiny black bag. "I don't want to go back. I wasn't born here but this is my home," said Maricruz Razo.

Earlier this month, Maricruz received this letter in the mail from U.S. Immigration and Customs, materializing her worst fear. She knew she could be sent back to Mexico. "With the violence, I don't want to go back. There's drug dealers and where guys kill women. I want to stay here," she continued.

Razo didn't know any English when she came to Bakersfield eleven years ago. She is now a straight A student at Bakersfield College. "I'm an illegal person but I'm the future of the U.S.," she noted.

President Obama agrees. He said it makes no sense to expel talented young people who are essentially Americans. His new plan has been met with mixed reviews in Bakersfield.

"I think they (should) show them the border. It's kind of cruel but that's the way I feel about it. I just think we're being overtaken by people breaking the law," said Morton Wallace.

"Those children are actually going to school here. They're learning here. We're hoping they will be productive here and when they do have talents, they will bring those talents here," said Debra Rivera.

For Razo, this could be a new beginning. Her mother and sister are also here illegally. They have a meeting June 26 where a judge will decide whether they must return to Mexico.

Well if you believe in god I guess that idea would work, then again why are the "white christians" against the "brown muslims"???? Oops, guess thats another story lol. Point is if you come to this country legally, no problem. If you come here ILLEGALLY you need to leave & come back when you can obey the law. Every other country in the world can do this why can't we?

it's just funny to me that some people get all worked up over "Illegal immigrants" my case is if your not one then mind your own business and don't get all worked up about it, seriously this country better yet this world does NOT belong to a specific race or any one other and God himself. He created this world for HIS children, so heres the question aren't we all considered his children? black, white, red, brown, yellow, etc... exactly so quit with this "everyone that doesn't belong here should leave this country" you sound stupid and in reality no one cares what you or any other person has to say. ;)

My way of looking at it is, if you did no come here legally I could care less where you ae from, your race, or religion get the heck out & do it right. My mom and her family came here LEGALLY from Canada & my das side of te family came hee LEGALY from Germany & Wales, if they could do i so an everyone else. We need o secure ALL our borders not just the southern one, after ll where did the trrorists tat blew up th trade eter cross from?

Well I find it funny that whenever illegal immigration is mentioned, everyone starts pointing at the mexicans. Not all illegals are mexican you know (and not all mexicans are illegal!) They come from all over the world. That's why some call it racist, even if that's not exactly the right word. Also when people assume anyone with a tan or a spanish sounding name is an illegal mexican on welfare, that to me is "racist," whether or not it's the correct word to use, I don't care, it's racist.

I love reading the comments here. Where did you people go to school? Did nobody learn how to spell or use proper puncuation? You all make yourselves look so stupid. It's gotten to the point where I don't even care what you have to say anymore, I just like reading all of your errors. It's quite hilarious actually!
