More than 700 patient files were stolen from a local laboratory.

The crime was discovered Monday, after someone broke into the office of Physicians Automated Laboratory on 17th Street in downtown Bakersfield over the weekend.

According to PAL, 745 patients had their information stolen: including names, addresses, phone numbers, birth dates, and lab work.

But, the patients who had their information stolen were only told about it this week, according to a memo from the lab.

We asked police about the break-in, but details are limited.

"Forced entry was made through windows. They discovered some office equipment, some syringes, and an undetermined amount of patient files were taken," said Sgt. Mary DeGeare, Bakersfield Police Department.

No arrests have been made and there are no suspects.

We contacted the laboratory Wednesday, but we were referred to their president who is out of town.

SSN numbers and financial data were not stolen. If you go to PAL's website it tells you what was taken, the timeframe for affected patients (2/1/12-3/26/12 and only 17th St patients), and how to protect yourself. http://www.pallab.org/website/privacy_breach_20120523.html

If anyone whose info. was stolen is reading this, someone has your birthdate, full name, and social security number now!!! You need to notify the credit bureaus for an initial 90-day fraud alert, the FTC for an identity theft alert, and the IRS. You must protect yourself fast!!! Don't delay as you may end up in my situation: Unable to collect your own tax return because someone obtained ALL of your information somehow and filed a tax return before you did, and they get your money! Now I have the burden of proving who I am to hopefully get what is mine! It's a damn shame and a huge headache. Cover your a**! HURRY!!!

Sounds like an inside job. Break in over the weekend and not discovered untill Monday, only a few employees would know how to disarm the alarm system.
