Santa Claus would be hard pressed, to match the generosity demonstrated by our community, during this year's KGET 17 Days of Christmas Toy Drive. Hundreds of families were able to receive what you so graciously gave.
It really is the true meaning of the holidays, giving to those less fortunate. And when we asked you to help, you did, delivering thousands of toys and joy to kids in our community who could really use a dose of holiday cheer.
At the Bakersfield Homeless Shelter, there is no shortage of smiling faces. "Kids are smiling, they're coming out of the room after Santa, they're happy, they have a toy," said Homeless Center Executive Director Louis Gill. Kids who once had little hope for a real Christmas shown how much they are cared for.
"I think in our community a lot of people are really giving people, and give the extra resources," said Shelly Bank, homeless center volunteer.
For the Morgan family, it will be a Christmas to remember. "It's great to have this service, because when your not employed, with no income it's hard," said James Morgan.
Jesus Maciel and his little brother, now have something to look forward to on Christmas morning. "It was awesome, like a dream come true to me, because I never get to have these toys."
A dream come true for thousands of kids, all thanks to many giving hearts in Bakersfield. In addition to the toy giveaway Saturday, volunteers at the shelter cooked meals for folks living at the shelter.
And a quick note to pass along to you, the shelter is still in need more supplies for the upcoming Christmas dinner. If you are interested in donating items, or volunteering your time, call the shelter at 322-9199.
