County fire fighters are still on scene of gas leak at an oil well site north of Lamont on Hermosa and Malaga Roads.  Firefighters arrived on scene just before 3:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

Officials say it's possibly natural gas. Five homes in the area have been evacuated.

The leak is also very loud. The Kern County Fire Captain on scene said it sounds like a jet engine. He says crews are on the way with specialized oilfield equipment who will drill horizontally and try to fill hole with mud an concrete.

Crews plan to be on scene for the next few hours.
