A local family is asking for your help to crack a six-year-old cold case.Two killers are still on the loose after 20-year-old Jaime Carlos Ortega from Bakersfield was killed in a drive-by shooting in east Bakersfield.
Ortega's family hopes the public can help finally bring closure to this case. They say they just want justice to be served and they're asking anyone with information to come forward.
Ortega had just turned 20 when he was shot and killed in 2006.
"Every day it hurts, especially every month on the 27th. It's hard," said father Salvador Ortega.
The family says Jaime Ortega was a caring person who was always happy. His sister Amanda says, "He was very fun, loving loved to listen to his corridos. He loved his car. He was a very loving person, very happy all the time, very friendly."
Ortega was just beginning to live his adult life. He had just moved into a house with his girlfriend, but his life was cut short the evening of April 27, 2006. Ortega and his girlfriend were walking home from a nearby mini-mart when the drive-by shooting took place on Oswell and Virginia Streets.
The Ortegas are no strangers to tragedy. Last year, they lost another son who was shot and killed after an altercation at a Bakersfield bar.
The family says they try not to dwell on the past, but instead remember the good times, which gives them strength.
