There's still no decision on whether Bear Valley Springs will get rid of its police department and hire the Kern County Sheriff's Department. Thursday night's Community Services District board meeting was packed with people and opinions.
Board members decided they need more information before they make any decision. It comes down to money. The board wants to see if they will save money by contracting with the Sheriff's Department and getting rid of their own police department.
The majority of the money to pay for the department comes from property taxes. The fear is the community won't collect enough in taxes in the future to afford the department. But, the larger concern with the people at the meeting was about their protection. They like the personal relationship they have with their police officers and don't think an outside source could provide that kind of security.
And, the current police department agreed.
"As to the suggestion of the Bear Valley Police Department be disbanded, we disagree," said Sgt. Dave Watts. "We come before the board and the community to let it be known that we are proud to serve this community and desire nothing less than continue as a team dedicated to serving our citizens. After decades of progress we feel that no one can do it better."
Maricopa recently voted to eliminate its police department and contract out the Kern County Sheriff's Department to save money.
But, the Community Service District board members of Bear Valley Springs says they want to make sure they will save money. That's why they want more information from the Sheriff's Department about additional expenses of maintaining the current police building for deputies and possible overtime and vacation pay.
Right now, members stress this is just a proposal they are looking into.
Because so many people were at Thursday night's meeting, the board is extending public comment. They will hold another meeting March 8th to hear public comment and they hope to have more information from the Sheriff's Department at that time.
