Engineer it, girl!

Free workshop teaches young girls about engineering

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Ribbons and curls can't -- and won"t -- stop some local little girls from putting their minds to the test.

Over one hundred future scientists ranging in ages four to six years old gathered at the second of four "Engineer It, Girl!" workshops put on by Valley PBS.

"I think it's sometimes intimidating for girls once they've hit a certain age to learn what engineering is," Jordan Escobar with Valley PBS said. "I feel like boys are often taught early on about that. It's important to teach girls early on what engineering is and get them familiar with the word engineering."

The goal is simple: empower young girls with the skills and knowledge to become engineers.

"As long as we can engineer a girl, I think that's all we are excited about," Escobar said.

The young engineers and their parents spent the morning focusing on making robots that wave out of cardboard boxes.

Before the building began, the girls listened to an electrical engineer, learning more about the craft.

Alex Johnston has taken his daughter Lorelai to every "Engineer It, Girl!" workshop.

He said it is important for young girls to know they can be just as good of an engineer as any boy can.

"I just hope that she enjoys herself and she sees this is something that you can do as a career," Johnston said. "Something that she can do in her life that is not just perhaps stereotypical of what maybe people think."

Danielle Porcho said she too hopes her science-loving daughter, Adeline, is inspired to follow her dreams.

"To see all these young girls get excited about math and science and engineering and to meet people out in the community that do the same things," Porcho said. "To get them excited about going into something then maybe they would have thought of going into."

There are still two more "Engineer It, Girl!" workshops.

The next one, scheduled in February, will focus on environmental engineering.

The workshops are free, but you must preregister.
