Your home can have a number of floor coverings, depending on the room. Your choices include carpet, ceramic tile, brick, slate, sheet vinyl, and wood. While each of these materials can produce beautiful floors, consideration should be given to factors like durability and comfort, as well as installation, maintenance, and repair costs. Carpet makes a room feel cozy and is best suited for low-traffic areas in bedrooms, dens, and dining rooms. Carpet tends to absorb dirt more than other floor coverings, so it should be avoided in areas with direct access to the outside. Wood flooring adds a nice touch to living rooms, dens, and dining rooms. Hardwood floors are a sign of quality and usually increase the value of a home. They are also extremely durable when installed properly. Vinyl flooring is most often installed in kitchens, bathrooms, foyers, and laundry rooms because it can be cleaned very easily. Varying in thickness and quality, vinyl flooring usually comes in sheets or tiles and is relatively inexpensive. Ceramic tiles are commonly used in damp or high-traffic areas including kitchens, baths, and foyers. Although more expensive than vinyl, tile is more elegant, easier to clean, and can last for the life of the house. This durability may be more cost effective in the long run.
