The Bull Fire burning north of Kernville is posing unique problems for firefighters. Not only do they have to deal with the heat, there's also constantly changing winds and steep terrain.

The Kern River Valley is known for wild winds, whipping in all directions. Not good when you throw in a wildfire.

"It changes as the day goes on.  It will go up canyon one moment and it will go down canyon as the afternoon continues," said Michelle Puckett with the Unites States Bureau of Land Management.

A soggy spring has made lots of fuel for the fire, which has now charged steep mountain sides and down canyon walls.

"There's a lot of steep terrain for firefighters," Puckett said, adding there are 22 planes and helicopters dousing the flames from the sky, in addition to ground crews trying to get the fire contained on the outer perimeters.

"It's moving northward and moving outward.”
