Kern County Superintendent of Schools officials say as an overall group, Kern student's scores improved this year from last About 130,000 kids in grades second through 11th took the tests this past spring.

Regardless of the improvements though, they say there is always more work to be done. "We're paying particular attention to providing more professional development to teachers, so those skills are guaranteed to get to students in the classroom," says Desiree Von Flue, administrator for the division of instructional services with Kern County Superintendent of Schools.

California students improved overall too. Fifty four percent scored proficient or above in English-language arts and 50 percent scored proficient or above in math, the highest percentage since the program's inception in 2003.

Officials also say it's important to remember that this is just one facet of a student's performance. In the next few weeks parents should receive a letter with their student's scores.
