There are several new laws that will go into effect on Sunday, January 1.  Here are just a few:

  • Police at sobriety checkpoints, before impounding cars of unlicensed drivers, will have to make an effort to allow the registered owner to pick it up.

  • Local authorities will now regulate the location of medical marijuana cooperatives.

  • Beer with added caffeine will be prohibited.

  • With a few exceptions, the use of consumer credit reports by employers when hiring will now be prohibited.

  • Self-service checkout line purchases for alcoholic beverages will now be prohibited.

  • A minor who is 12-years-of-age will be able to consent to medical care related to a sexually transmitted disease.

  • The name of the food stamp program to Cal-Fresh.

Jeff: I think that is to protect the kids from over-reacting parents, who might decide the kid's punishment is a whipping, or worse. Yeah, 12 seems a bit young to implement a law like this however.

Childern as young as 12 can now receive treatment for a vinerial disease without a parent's knowledge. Children can receive birth control without a parent's knowledge. Children can obtain an abortion without a parent's knowledge. BUT let a child skip school without a parent's knowledge and the parent can go to jail. Welcome to The Peoples Republic of California.

Law enforcement has to make a reasonable effort to locate the registered owner of a vehicle being driven by an unlicensed driver before it can be impounded. What if the vehicle is owned by the unlicensed driver, he gets to call a friend with a license? Is there a check to make sure the vehicle is insured before someone else drives the vehicle? Calif law requires all vehicles operated on roadways be insured, or will that be over looked?

That's great. So a kid 12 years old can get venerial disease and the parents don't have the right to know. Gotta love the immoral lawmakers we have in California.
