Residents of metro Bakersfield have myriad options for recycling their Christmas trees, according to the Kern County Waste Management Department.

There will be 28 drop-off locations throughout Kern County from Dec. 28 to Jan. 8. People also can put their trees in their green waste container provided they cut them into small enough pieces that the container lid closes completely.

Other options include taking trees to the Mount Vernon Green Waste Facility or the landfill. In those cases, tarp or cover the trees to avoid paying an untarped/unsecured load fee of a minimum of $5 per load.

And several groups will pick up Christmas trees for a small donation.

People need to remove all ornaments, lights and the tree stand from trees before recycling them. The trees will be cut up to make mulch for city parks, schoolyards and roadways.
