Nominations are now being accepted for the 2008 Real Heroes Recognition award. The award honors outstanding residents of Kern County who have committed meritorious acts or exhibited exemplary service in the community.
The Real Heroes Recognition Luncheon will be held March 21, 2008 at the Holiday Inn Select at 801 Truxtun Ave. The event recognizes community members who have exhibited exemplary behavior or participated in the saving of a life.
Congressman Kevin McCarthy will be serving as the honorary chairperson of this year’s event.
Categories for the 2008 awards are: Educator, EMT/Safety, Firefighter, Good Samaritan, Heroic Act, Law Enforcement, Medical Professional, Military, Outstanding Role Model – Adult: Outstanding Role Model – Group: Outstanding Role Model – Youth, and Fallen Hero. Nominees for the awards will be accepted through Jan. 4, 2008 and announced on Jan. 11, 2008. Recipients are selected by a panel of community leaders in February. The recipients will be announced at a media party scheduled for March 7, 2008.
This year the awards program will feature a Youth Art and Essay contest with the theme “What is a Hero?”. The winners of the art and essay contest will be announced on Jan. 11, 2008. The work of the youth will appear in the program for the Real Heroes Recognition Luncheon on March 21, 2008. Winners will be invited to attend the luncheon. Community members or businesses may nominate an individual or group for a Real Heroes Award. Nomination forms are available at www.KernRedCross.org or at kget.com. Nominees must reside in the County of Kern and event taken place anywhere from January 2007 to December 2007. The nominator must submit a clearly stated, detailed description of why the nominee is being nominated in the Real Hero category. Any supporting documentation including news reports, articles, or names of witnesses for verification should be emailed to The Kern County Red Cross contact. Winners will be selected by a group of community leaders and will be recognized at the "Real Heroes - A Tribute to Heroism" ceremony March 21, 2008
