Nominations are now being accepted for the 2012 Red Cross Real Heroes Recognition awards. The award honors outstanding residents of Kern County who have committed meritorious acts or exhibited exemplary service in the community. The person you are nominating must have demonstrated the action within the year 2011
The Real Heroes Recognition Dinner will be Saturday, April 14, 2012. The event recognizes community members who have exhibited exemplary behavior or participated in the saving of a life.
Congressman Kevin McCarthy will be serving as the honorary Chairperson of this year’s event as he has for the past eight years.
Categories for the 2012 awards are:
Youth Hero, Good Samaritan Hero, Educator, Law Enforcement Hero, Fire Rescue Hero, Community Partner Hero, Health Care Hero, Military Hero, Animal Rescue Hero, and Fallen Heroes. Nominees for the awards will be accepted through Jan. 31, 2012 and announced in April 2012. Award recipients are selected by a panel of community leaders in February. The recipients will be announced at a media party at Young Wooldridge that will be scheduled a couple of weeks prior to the luncheon.
Winners in each of the categories as well as their sponsors will be invited to attend the luncheon. Contest entry materials can be obtained at the American Red Cross-Kern Chapter office at 5035 Gilmore Avenue or by calling 661-324-6427.

Community members or businesses may nominate an individual or group for a Real Heroes Award. Nominees must reside in the County of Kern and event taken place anywhere from January 2011 to December 2011. The nominator must submit a clearly stated, detailed description of why the nominee is being nominated in the Real Hero category. Any supporting documentation including news reports, articles, or names of witnesses for verification should be emailed to The Kern County Red Cross contact. Winners will be selected by a group of community leaders and will be recognized at the "Real Heroes - A Tribute to Heroism" ceremony to be announced.
