An east Bakersfield woman says a bunch of trash bags were left not too far from her home more than a week ago. She says hundreds of volunteers did a cleanup in the area, but they left the trash behind.
Packed trashed bags are still in a vacant lot in east Bakersfield, where they've been sitting for several days. Local volunteers cleaned the area as part of the Great American Cleanup put on by Keep Bakersfield Beautiful. But, a handful of trash bags and piles of junk left behind have one neighbor upset.
The bags sit directly under a 'No dumping' sign.
"It's such a big event, and the bigger the event the more bags out there,” said Sal Moretti, with Bakersfield's Solid Waste division. “Our crews are limited, but we're not that limited. We're out there constantly picking up bags, but sometimes the bags are put into a corner, so your help is needed with that."
Close to 9,000 volunteers helped with the cleanup. The woman we spoke with says since then, several homeless people have opened all the trash bags.
The city says it’s working on it.
