A year and a half ago, 3-year-old Nevaeh Sherrell was playing in the front yard when a neighbor's six-foot tall English Mastiff got loose and mauled her.

Monday, we met up with Nevaeh to see how she's doing after the horrific encounter.

It has been a tough road for the Sherrells, but for how far they have come, they couldn't be happier.

"After it happened I was really upset, like any parent would be upset after their child being bit. But, after a few months we have to realize things happen for a reason." said Carrie Sherrell, Nevaeh's mother.

After plastic surgery, Nevaeh's wounds healed nicely. Now she smiles through only slight scars. The little girl remembers the attack like it was yesterday. "His gate was open, and that gate was open, and the gate didn't lock. It was scary when it bite me," she explained.

The dog still lives in the same house with a bigger fence around the yard. But, it still gets out from time to time, as seen in video Nevaeh's aunt and uncle sent us.

"I think he's too big for that house and yard. I think he belongs on a bigger place where he can run around and wont be able to get out and bite people" said Katrina Philips.

The Sherrells say they racked up thousands of dollars in medical bills. They looked into suing the dog's owner, but they say they didn't pursue it because they would not be able to get anything from the owner if they won.

We went to the dog owner's home, but no one was home.

Despite the attack, the Sherrells say they have no hard feelings toward the dog or its owners.

@Jodeno- You moron Bull Mastiffs are stronger than Pit Bulls! National Geographic Channel already proved that on " Bite Force Test" and " Dog Attack Styles" which you can see on Youtube.com. Mastiff= 556 PSI and APBT @ 235 PSI. You do the math- not to mention the difference between the weight- we are talking about almost, if not 100lbs.

Why has this dog not been taken out of this home? If the dog still gets out then they have shown that they can't care for the dog properly and this is a safety hazard for everyone!

If this were a pit bull it would have been killed.
