According to a Kern County Grand Jury report, the name Wasco originates from a Native American word "wacqlo" meaning a cup or small bowl made of horn.

The city of Wasco, Oregon was named for the word near the main Wasco Native American village. The Wasco name in Kern County was adopted and changed from its original name of Deweyville by the founder of the city after relocating from Oregon.
