Monica wants to know why there isn't an extra tax on beer instead of cigarettes?
According to a representative with the California Board of Equalization, beer and cigarettes are subject to excise taxes and sales taxes.
The alcoholic beverage tax is a per gallon excise tax collected on the sale, distribution, or importation of alcoholic beverages in California.
The board says revenues from the tax are deposited into the alcohol beverage control fund. The revenues are withdrawn for use by the state's general fund or used to pay refunds under this program.
